Materials Needed:

  • Bulky (Size 5) yarn
  • 6.5 mm (K) crochet hook for the band
  • 8 mm hook for the body
  • Fur pompom (optional)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Gauge:

  • 4″ x 4″ (10 cm x 10 cm) = 12 stitches x 15 rows in half double crochet (HDC)

Hat Sizes:

  • Adjust the initial chain for the band’s length to fit the head circumference snugly, and adjust the number of rows to change the hat’s height.

Abbreviations:

  • ch = Chain
  • sl st = Slip Stitch
  • sc = Single Crochet
  • hdc = Half Double Crochet
  • hdc2tog = Half Double Crochet Two Together (Decrease)
  • BLO = Back Loop Only

Pattern:

Hat Band (Ribbed Look):

  1. Start the Band: With a 6.5 mm (K) hook, ch 9.
  2. Row 1: sc in the second ch from hook, sc in each ch across, ch 1, turn (8 sc).
  3. Row 2: sc in BLO of each sc across, ch 1, turn.
  4. Repeat Row 2 for the length needed to wrap around the head comfortably (typically around 40-50 rows, depending on head size). Sl st the ends together to create a band.

Body of the Hat:

  1. Switch to 8 mm Hook: Pick up and sc around the edge of the band. Distribute stitches evenly around. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
  2. Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc now and throughout), hdc in the same place as join and in each stitch around. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 2.
  3. Round 2: Repeat Round 1.
  4. Continue repeating Round 1 until the hat body reaches 7-8 inches (18-20 cm) in height from the band up for an adult size hat (adjust based on size).
  5. Decrease Rounds: To shape the top, hdc2tog then hdc in the next 4-5 stitches, repeat ** around. Continue reducing each round by decreasing the number of hdc between decreases until only a few stitches remain.

Closing the Hat:

  1. Final Decrease Round: Hdc2tog around until you have around 6 stitches left.
  2. Cut the Yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through a yarn needle, run it through the remaining stitches, pull tight to close, and secure with a knot.

Attaching Pompom:

  • Attach a fur pompom to the top for the finishing touch, sewing it securely to the hat.

Finishing:

  • Weave in all ends with your yarn needle.

Customize Your Hat:

  • Color: Change colors every few rows for stripes.
  • Texture: Add rounds of puff stitches or front post/back post stitches for a textured look.
